I was recently asked by a member of my family about the use of Apple Cider Vinegar for health. She had heard that it was good for digestion but had been told by colleagues that it would rot her insides :). I've been a firm advocate of ACV for a long time now and it is one of the staples in our house that I use on a daily basis and I put it on most of my clients protocols to be taken in one form or another.
So what is it and how can it be used?
ACV Is fermented apple cider. During the fermentation process it forms beneficial probiotics (good bacteria) and enzymes.
These are the areas that I use if for in our home:
1. Digestive concerns - taking 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar in water prior to eating can help us to break down and digest our foods easier - which may help to ease symptoms such as bloating, belching and acid reflux. If one of the family are feeling a bit nauseous, gone off their food or feel like they have the start of a stomach bug, I will put a dash of ACV into a water bottle with sliced ginger and some mint leaves. I then top this up with water and get them to sip it throughout the day - filling up as necessary. I find that this gives great relief.
2. Reducing inflammation in the body. ACV is said to help to reduce inflammation so may help with symptoms such as joint pain and aches . Again adding ACV into water and drinking can help to reduce this.
3. Fungal infections - ACV is anti fungal so can be used as a natural anti fungal for things such as athletes foot. Simply make up a spray or add ACV into a bucket with warm water and soak your feet.
4. Skin and hair health - ACV is great used as a skin toner (diluted in water) and a hair rinse. Helping to enhance and support both.
5. Weight maintenance. ACV is said to help enhance weight loss and help individuals maintain a healthy weight.
6. Chemical free household cleaners. I add ACV to water, bicarb of soda and a little essential oil to make a very effective chemical free multi purpose cleaner for the house.
Apple Cider Vinegar is also said to help normalise blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels along with a balanced diet wholefood diet.
So as well as drinking it in water you can also add it into homemade meals such as soups, stews and casseroles. It is also essential if you make your own bone broth as it helps to release the beneficial minerals from the bones.
I usually use Bragg's which can be found in most health food shops. But feel free to get another brand as long as it is raw, unpasteurised and with "the mother".
